Sustainability Community Breakfast: Reducing Textile Waste in the Region
September 19 @ 7:30 am - 9:00 pm
Textiles are one of the fastest growing waste streams. In the Metro Vancouver region, more and more clothing is ending up in the garbage – the equivalent of about 44 t-shirts per person per year! In 2016, Metro Vancouver began researching ways to tackle textile waste. Currently we are assessing potential programs and policies to help transition towards a more close-loop fashion system that maximizes the number of times garments are worn – including circular fashion business models that design for durability, reuse/resale, maintenance/repair, re-certifying, and recycling into new clothing. But we aren’t there yet! Reducing clothing waste in the region will require a sustained effort to spread the word in our communities, collaborate and engage with industry, and advance fabric recycling technologies.
Join us to hear more about this issue, and local alternatives to sending textiles to the landfill.
